BIG database

The BIG database consists of brain imaging data, genetic data and results of cognitive tasks and questionnaires of over 2500 healthy adults subjects recruited in the Nijmegen area. Below you will find specific information about the data in the database and which tools were used to proces the data.

Brain imaging

Subjects are scanned in either a 1.5T or a 3.0T Siemens MRI scanner in the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. All subjects in BIG undergo a structural MRI scan. To segment the MRI images two software packages are used. DTI data and/or resting state data are available for part of the sample.

  • Anatomical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 
  • Diffusor Tensor Imaging (DTI)
  • Resting state imaging scans (work in progress)
  • Voxel Based Morphology (VBM) (protocol is work in progress)

Genetic data

Subjects participating in the BIG study are asked to donate saliva. DNA is extracted from the saliva and processed and genotyped. The genetic data aviablable include:

  • Genome wide genotyping for Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) (affymetrix 6.0 with Hapmap 2 and 1000 genome imputation)
  • Popular Variable Number of Tandenm Repeats (VNTR's) (e.g. DAT1, DRD4, 5HTT etc)
  • Copy Number Variation (CNV's)

  • Reversal learning task
